Columns (Diptych)

Sometimes, unexpected circumstances lead to worthwhile outcomes. In early February, Cortland County experienced a blackout, knocking power out across a large area, including Greek Peak. I happened to be there snowboarding on a rare solo outing, but fortunately, not on the ski lifts when this occurred.

Once back at my car with an open afternoon ahead of me, I was at a loss for what I should do. Ultimately, I decided to go to the Lime Hollow Nature Center. I had been there once before and remembered the beautiful spruce trees.

I was vaguely upset that I had lost my gloves in the commotion (they turned up later) and that I would be aimlessly wandering around instead of carving down the mountain on a kid-free day. Nevertheless, I went walking with my camera inhand. The blackout that led me to Lime Hollow resulted in these photos. It didn’t seem like I had much at the time, but later, when working with the images, I began to see them as a diptych, displayed side-by-side in large frames with white mats.
