Hi friends, I recently created a new piece for an upcoming show in October. This piece is constructed of nine, 16”(h) x 12”(w) frames that create an installation dimension of 44” x 56”. As I was working on this piece, I really didn’t know what I had until I hung all the frames together. The idea of this piece is that each panel is a small vignette of a larger image. Because there is no horizon line or sense of direction, once I broke the piece apart into nine images, I somewhat lost track of how it all fit together or what was up and what was down. That’s when I knew it was working! I had taken this photograph months ago, and it was just one of those quick shots I didn’t think much of at the time. I had stuck an umbrella in the trees to block the light so I could lie on our hammock in semi-shade and without the sun directly in my eyes. Then later on, when looking at the photo, I thought there might be something there. Mostly, I love the whimsical quality of it.
I installed this in our barn, which has a similar wood color as the space where the work will be hung, in the salon of Forge Cellars in Burdett on the east side of Seneca Lake. The show is curated by Domineca Brockman and Ariel Bullion Ecklund, and the exhibition is called “Beyond the Frame: Pushing the Boundaries of Photography.” It will open on October 18, and if you’re local, I hope you can be there!
