Magnolia Clock, Twelve Days in April

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished” –Lao Tzu

I recently finished my Magnolia clock, with each hour represented by a day in the progression from buds to flowers to wilted flowers to the start of green leaves. Logistically, this was a completely different way of working for me, using the clock as the frame for the print and being precise about the divisions of hours while allowing for some organic overlap between the states of change.

A clock is a consistent reminder of what needs to get done, what should get done, where you need to be, and how much time is remaining. While this is of course practical and necessary, I sometimes think this is not a good way to structure life. This clock represents a more malleable concept of time where it’s more about transitions and a reminder that things take the time they take.
